Exchange Student of Indonesia

The world may be full of diverse things but we humans have the unique skill to adapt and create new experiences as we go on with our existence.
When time comes that we need to venture into different place the fate is trying to test us how strong we are.I started my journey as an exchange student in the wonderful country of Indonesia and our receiving Institution was the IPB (INSTITUT PERTANIAN BOGOR) located around 60 kilometers south from the National Capital of Jakarta, Bogor is the 6th largest city of Jabodetabek.

August 15,2018 (Day 1)
Arrival at Jakarta Indonesia
When we arrive at the airport, we met our coordinator and they drive us to Bogor. After that, they brought us to our next destination, our apartment. Then, we took a rest in the morning and on the afternoon we met our student buddies; Safira, Nendy and Agih. They brought us to the nearest mall called Botani Square; we bought kitchen utensils and different foods. I had learn to adjusts, to adapt on their environment, to be stay positive and most of all to be open-minded.

August 16, 2018 (Day 2)
I woke up at 6:30am, then ready to prepare our breakfast, at 9:00am, we went to our school and met our teacher, Ms. Renny, she taught us the basic language of Indonesia; like Selamat Pagi (Good morning), Teremaksih (Thank you), sama-sama (Welcome) and how to read their alphabet. Then, we had our dinner, Nasi Goreng (fried rice with side dish vegetables) and Mei Goring (canton guisado). These are Indonesian food so delicious but super spicy. I’m so thankful I have learned and experiences a lot on this day.

August 17, 2018 (Day 3)
It’s our Free day! Because this is their Independence Day, we went to their Traditional Market (Public market) to buy chicken, rice, vegetables and other seasoning. It is so hard because the store owner cannot understood English. So we ask for the help of Google Translator, then we were able to understand them and help our student buddies. I had learned again different words on their market these are: ikan (fish), ayam (chicken), daging sapi (beef), telur (egg), kentang (potato) and many more. I’m so happy that I can learned different words every day.

August 18, 2018 (Day 4)
We woke early because Ms. Intani told us that our class will start at 8:00am. But sad to say, it was cancelled. So our student buddies picked up us in our apartment at 1:00pm to attend our bahasa class. Again, I had learn to read their time in bahasa like Jam tujuh tepat (7:00 oclock), Senin (Monday), Selasa (Tuesday), Rabu (Wednesday), Kamis (Thursday), Jumat (Friday), Sabtu (Saturday) and Minggu (Sunday), after our class, we’ve met our new friends from Malaysia Foo and Amira

August 19, 2018 (Day 5)
We went to Ms. Intani house to attent and witness the birthday celebration of his son . it is our first time to eat Indonesian foods. It is so delicious but it’s so spicy.

August 20, 2018 (Day 6)
This is our third day on our Bahasa language class. In our class, we had dance the “ Pinoy Ako” dance to entertain our student buddies, our fellow Malaysian inter and our teacher and happy to hear that they enjoy it. After that, we took our lunch at McDonalds. This day again, I learned how to count numbers like; satu (one), dua(two), tiga (three), empat (four), lima (five), enam (six), tujuh (seven), delapan (eight), Sembilan (nine) and sepuluh (ten). I’m so happy and thankful because I really imagine that in a few steps I can really master their language.

August 21, 2018 (Day 7)
Fourth day of Bahasa Language Class with our two friends from Malaysia, we song the Balonku(Indonesian Nursery Rhyme). After that, we played a game, the Indonesian message relay. It is really amazing and enjoyable. After our class, we ate our lunch at Trio Masakan Padang Restoran. Then, we went to the IPB Main Campus at Dramaga together with our coordinators. We met some staff of their university they checked our passport and they gave us bag with pen and notebook.

August 22, 2018 (Day 8)
Today is a Holiday because of Muslim Celebration. I woke up 9:00 am and went to Traditional market to buy foods again. I had learn how to manage my time and how to budget my money to only the important needs first before anything else.

August 23, 2018 (Day 9)
Interview and Tour at BLST IPB PRESS
I woke up early to prepare our breakfast. Today is our schedule for interview in BLST IPB at 8:00am. in our interview, they asked us to introduce our name, school and what is our course all about. After that, they had tour us to their production are, the IPB Science Park. Then, we have met our internship mates. We pass by on some eatery in front of BLST and took our lunch together with our Malaysian friends and our coordinator.

After that, we went to batik, they introduce us all about batik and we also make our own batik with the use of melted candles.

August 24, 2018 (Day 10)
This is our Fifth day of our Bahasa Language Class. I got surprised when our teacher told us that this is our last day of class. We only check our assignment and then take picture in the SEA-TVET. After that, we ate in the eatery and ready to go to the pool. YES, we planned to go to the swimming pool to enjoy swimming there. It is really an enjoyable and memorable experience for us.

August 25, 2018 (Day 11)
It’s our Free Day!
We went to the market again to buy foods. Then, we have a window shopping to every store we have pass by.
August 26, 2018 (Day 12)
We decided to go to BTM Mall to have a window shopping. We invited our Malaysian friends to come with us in order to associate with other people and expose their selves to the new environment.

August 27, 2018 (Day 13)
Tour at the IPB International Convention Center, Chef E’e toured us in the kitchen. They introduce the kitchen staff and showed us the modern equipment that they are using. After that, they gave us different Indonesian food to eat.

August 28, 2018 (Day 14)
1st day of OJT (On the Job Training) in IPB-International Convention Center. Executive Chef. Ugi Sugianto assigned me in the Cold Kitchen and I have met our mentor, Chef. Dedi. I learned the proper slicing with different styles, making condiments and how to make Pudding Roti (Indonesian Dessert). I have learn that we must always have a presence of mind and being an observant.

August 29, 2018 (Day 15)
2nd day of OJT, This day, we prepared the Patchole (Indonesian Salad), Es Campur (Halo-halo). Chef. Dedi give me some Menu of Indonesian Cuisine. I also learned the proper handling and clean sanitation.

August 30, 2018 (Day 16)
3rd day of OJT, This day we prepared Ketoprak and cooked Peanut Sauce. I also learn the proper procedure in slicing and how to place and plated food in a serving tray.

August 31, 2018 (Day 17)
This day is our DAY OFF……

September 1, 2018 (Day 18)
4th day of our OJT
The kitchen is not busy because there is no event anymore. So, we only clean the table and help slice the beef to be prepared for the next day.

September 2, 2018 (Day 19)

5th day of OJT, this day we prepared and sliced the vegtable for tomorrow.

September 3, 2018 (Day 20)

This day we prepared and cooked Indonesian pickles, fried garlic and spicy sauce. I learned the easy procedure of making spicy sauce that i need to boil it until it finish and blend the chili. I also learned how to prepare and arrange the pickles in the serving pan. Then, we continue working like what they have told us before. We are doing our daily routine that they assigned on us.

After our duty, Ma’am Intani invited us, together with my two Malaysian friends to watch a movie entitled ” wiro sableng” I’m so happy because we had a bonding together with our buddies and Coordinator.

September 4, 2018 (Day 21)

We have not so much work to do. We only prepare all the ingredients for our menu tomorrow.

September 5, 2018 (Day 22)

On this day , chef gave me a task, to slice the carrots , cabbage, cauliflower, and the meat.

September 6, 2018 (Day 23)

I prepared all the ingredients for tomorrow Ma’am Intani go to the kitchen and told the chef that this is our last day of our OJT. We are also surprise and really felt sad because we have so many memories here. After that, we prepare the kitchen and took a picture together. We gave our sincere thank you and for accepting and teaching us to cook new menus and most of all for giving us some new recipes that we can use. We say goodbye to him.

September 7, 2018 (Day 24)

We go back to our school we need to cook “langka chip’s “. I have so many question on my mind if how can they make the jackfruit crispy because this fruit is very juicy. When ma’am explained to us we need to use vacuum frying. So, it really answered my question on my mind. I learned the procedure of “langka chips; first clean the langka, then put it to the freezer to make it cold. Then put it to the vacuum frying and wait until it finish. After that, put the jackfruit on the spinner to take away the oil on the jackfruit. I’m so really thankful that I have learned new knowledge on this kind of food.

On the afternoon, we prepared ourselves for the interview of our Dean. The Dean asked us about the learnings and knowledge that we got on our one month staying here.

On the evening, we went at the Amiras Hotel because this night is our farewell party. There is a short program, they gave us certificates and congratulate us. We also gave them message to give them big thanks for all what we have learned. It is really sad, we cried while hugging them, together with our coordinators and buddies. They also told us that if incase, we want to go back their, we will gonna call them and they will help us. I’m also thankful to our coordinator and faculty of IPB for accepting, helping and accommodating us.

September 8, 2018 (Day 25)

On this day, i woke up early because ma’am Intani told us that we will go to SAFARI, INDONESIA. We will go their to go around and look for the different animals their. It is really far, but we are so happy because i saw a PANDA 🐼 and i also ride on a camel. We also watched the lion tricks, the globe of death and so many more.

September 9-10 (Last Day)

We prepared our luggage and our self because we will go to the airport at 9pm, because our flight ✈ going to manila is 12am. At the airport, we took a pictures on our buddies and coordinator. Saying goodbye and thankyou on them. I felt tire but i felt blessed because on our experience, i have learned many things. I knew these experiences will really contribute a big part of my life. At the end of the day, i felt blessed on the LORD for guiding and helping us. It is really a great experience!! Thank you so much BOGOR AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY (IPB INSTITUTE PERTANIAN BOGOR)
